Dressing for long-haul flights

When considering what to wear for a flight, particularly when dressing for long haul flights, comfort is key. Forget restrictive items such as jeans, instead choose soft, breathable and roomy clothing that you can move easily in.

Stretchy fabrics are ideal as they move as you do so you don’t feel confined. Leggings are an excellent choice, offering warmth during often chilly flights, yet are light enough to prevent overheating when you land in a warmer climate. A lightweight oversized sweatshirt or a relaxed-fit top, such as a roomy shirt, completes your laidback flight look.

Don’t forget practical accessories either – think compression socks to improve circulation, an eye mask to block out cabin light and a comfy travel pillow to prevent that dreaded head-bob that often disrupts airplane naps.

Master the layer game

When dressing for long haul flights, unpredictable cabin temperatures are bound to keep you guessing this is where layers come in. Start with a base layer – either a short or long sleeve cotton T-shirt works best then add a soft cardigan or hoodie that can easily be slipped on and off as needed. Finish with a light jacket.

Think also about clothing that you can wear on a plane and also at your final destination. If you’re heading somewhere sunny, browse our holiday shop for pieces that will work double-duty. Flowing dresses and drawstring linen trousers are great travelling choices – just layer up with a light cardigan, a denim jacket or a scarf. Wearing these also means you’ll step off the plane holiday-ready.

Your comfort goes beyond just clothes, though. Keep yourself hydrated with plenty of water and try and avoid coffee or glass of wine – your skin will thank you.

Wear the right shoes

When deciding on the best shoes for wearing on a flight, prioritise comfort and convenience above all. Slip-on styles are essential for hassle-free airport experiences, allowing you to breeze through security checkpoints without fumbling with laces or buckles. For this reason, slip-on clogs or mules are an easy option – you can always add socks to keep your feet snug.

Your feet naturally swell during long flights due to pressure changes and reduced circulation, making flexible footwear crucial. Look for designs with stretchy materials and memory foam insoles that accommodate any swelling during flights. Consider cushioned slip-on trainers for all-day comfort: they’re also easy to kick off mid-flight.

For a more polished look, sleek loafers are a great option or perhaps choose soft ballet pumps that can easily fit in your carry-on if you prefer changing into something different mid-journey.
