Formal wedding attire for men
If you’re invited to a wedding with a formal dress code, you’ll either need to invest in a classic three-piece suit or if the invitation specifies black tie, a tuxedo. Investing in a suit made from good quality material such as a wool-mix or linen is key. For a more elevated feel, avoid patterned or shiny fabrics and pair with a classic shirt in white, pale blue or grey. Read our suit guide to explore the different fits of suit we offer.
Dressing in a tuxedo might be out of your comfort zone, but if the dress code is black tie, you’ll need to wear one to attend the function as a wedding guest. Tuxedo jackets tend to be black, but there are other colour options available such as cream. Wear it over our traditional dress shirt, with a classic pleated bib, double cuffs and an easy-to-iron finish. Finally, don’t forget a bow tie: these are usually made from silk and you can also buy them in a set with a pocket square or cummerbund.

Semi-formal and smart-casual wedding ideas
Not every wedding requires a tuxedo, many celebrations are now more relaxed affairs, so smart-casual dressing is acceptable. Wearing a suit is still desirable, but it can be styled in a less formal way to reflect the more casual dress code. A tie is optional, so choose a shirt with a retro-style revere collar that can be worn without one.
Lighter shades such as ecru and pastel blues work well for summer weddings, whilst darker colours suit occasions in the autumn and winter months or for evening-only events. For an alternative to a suit, pair a tailored blazer with slim-fit chinos for a more relaxed, contemporary look. Pair with suitable footwear such as classic brogues or loafers.
Men’s outfits for summer weddings
If you’re invited to a wedding in the summer months or that’s being held abroad, you’ll need to choose an outfit accordingly. Think comfort as well as aesthetics as you might have to deal with much warmer temperatures (yes, even in the UK). Looking smart and keeping cool requires a bit of planning, the most important consideration is to wear breathable natural fibres such as linen or cotton. Choose a loose-fitting suit rather than one with a skinny or slim-fitting cut to allow more room for air flow, especially if the weather is extremely humid.
If it’s a beach wedding, a suit jacket worn with shorts is acceptable, as is wearing loafers without socks or smart leather sandals. Accessories such as a Panama hat and sunglasses will help to shield you from the elements: essential if you’re attending an al fresco wedding.
Wedding accessories for men
Buying a suit is the starting point for a man’s wedding outfit, the next thing to think about is accessories to complete the look. Colour-coordinated accessories such as a matching silk tie and pocket square or cufflinks finish the look and add a touch of luxury.
Choose accessories carefully; for example make sure that your belt and shoes either match or complement each other tonally for a seamless appearance.
